Highest refuge on the GR20 at 1991 m, perched below Paglia Orba — one of Corsica's most iconic peaks. Snacks; spectacular sunrise over the mountains.
The place
At 1,991 m, Ciottulu di i Mori is the highest refuge on the GR20, and it knows it. The little stone building sits on a saddle directly beneath Paglia Orba — the fin-shaped peak they call the Matterhorn of Corsica — and the mountain fills the sky behind the terrace so completely that photographs of your dinner will accidentally be photographs of it.
Evenings up here are cold, luminous and strangely quiet; you can watch the Golo valley fall away in blue layers all the way toward the west coast. Ambitious hikers drop their packs and scramble toward Paglia Orba's summit in the afternoon light — a serious, hands-on climb, only for confident scramblers in good weather. Everyone else does the sensible thing: claims a mattress, adds every layer they own, and steps outside once more before bed, because the sunrise from this terrace is the best free ticket on the trail.
