Bergerie de Ballone

Atmospheric private bergerie in a clearing — local cheese, charcuterie, drinks and hearty meals. A taste of authentic Corsican mountain life.
The place
Half an hour below Tighjettu, the trees return, the air softens, and Bergerie de Ballone appears in its clearing like a rumour made real: plastic chairs, long tables, and the smell of something excellent happening on a grill. After the mineral drama of the high passes, the pastoral shift is almost comical — one moment you're picking through scree, the next a pig is inspecting your trekking poles.
This is the GR20's other personality: the shepherd's Corsica of cheese, charcuterie and unhurried afternoons. Order generously — hearty mountain cooking is the whole point of stopping here — and eat it slowly under the trees while the Cinto massif glows high above the clearing. Many hikers push on and regret it; those who stay get a gentle evening, a river close by, and the rare pleasure of a night that smells of woodsmoke instead of wet granite.
