Mountain hotel at a road crossing (D84) with a real shop, bar and restaurant. Hot showers, cold beer, and the first proper resupply since Haut-Asco.
The place
Castel di Vergio is not pretty, and nobody cares. The big mountain hotel by the D84 road is the north's great decompression chamber: a real shop with shelves, a bar with cold beer, hot water that arrives on demand rather than by prayer. Hikers who have been rationing biscuits since Haut-Asco walk the shop aisles slowly, touching things, like visitors in a museum of abundance.
At around 1,400 m among beech and pine, the air here smells of forest rather than dust, and the mood is a pleasant mix of relief and anticipation: the granite chaos of the north is behind you, and ahead lies the gentler, greener middle section toward Lac de Nino. Do your washing, call home from the car park where the signal lives, and repack with care — the shop is the best resupply until Vizzavona. Then let the bar take care of the rest of your evening.
