The place

The walk to Vaccaghia crosses one of the strangest and loveliest landscapes in Corsica: the pozzines of Lac de Nino, emerald lawns threaded with glassy pools where half-wild horses graze as if someone had ordered them from a catalogue of perfect scenery. After days of vertical granite, this high plateau feels like a hallucination — flat, green, silent except for wind and the occasional whinny.

The bergerie itself sits at the plateau's far edge, a working shepherd's outpost with long views back across the grasslands you've just crossed. Evenings here are big-sky affairs: golden light raking the plain, cattle drifting home, and dinner eaten outdoors while the temperature dives. It's a simple place — book by phone, expect rustic and receive it — but few stops on the GR20 give you a sunset this wide or a morning this calm. Fill your bottles before the ridge tomorrow.
