Gateway to the dramatic high-ridge crossing via Breche de Capitello (2225 m). Popular refuge; books out weeks ahead in July. Meals, water.

The place

Manganu guards the doorway back into the high mountains. The refuge sits by a bridge over a clear stream at the head of a grassy valley, and its terrace looks straight up at the wall you'll climb tomorrow: the ramp to the Brèche de Capitello at 2,225 m, gateway to the wildest ridge day on the southern half of the north. Hikers study it over dinner the way sailors study weather charts.

Downstream, the river gathers into pools deep enough for a proper wash — the kind of ice-water plunge that produces involuntary opera. This is a popular, sociable refuge that fills fast in July, so booking well ahead is not optional. Go to bed early: the crossing beyond the brèche, past the twin lakes of Capitello and Melo far below, is best walked in morning light, and it's the sort of day you'll be describing to strangers for years.
