The largest PNRC refuge (48 beds) in a dramatic rocky basin below the old Cirque de la Solitude bypass. Meals, small shop, and big mountain atmosphere.
The place
Tighjettu clings to the mountainside on stilts, and arriving from the Pointe des Éboulis you see it long before you reach it — a wooden ark moored in a wilderness of scree and slab. The descent to its door is knee-testing, so the first thing most hikers do on the terrace is sit down very deliberately and not move for some time. The second thing is to look back up at the pass and feel quietly heroic.
The basin here sits below the old bypass of the Cirque de la Solitude, and the scenery has the raw, freshly-quarried look of high Corsica at its best. Evenings are sociable: this is the largest of the park refuges, and the dinner tables hum with route comparisons in five languages. Water tumbles past in the stream below, and if you bivouac, the terraced pitches beneath the refuge catch the last of the sun.
