On the trail

The southern GR20 opens with a change of register. Out of Vizzavona the trail climbs a steady 1,000 m, but it does so through deep, shady laricio pine and beech forest — a world of soft needles underfoot and filtered green light, kind to legs still processing the north. The gradient is honest work rather than combat, and the higher you go the more the trees thin to reveal the Monte d'Oro massif behind you, a farewell portrait of the mountains you've just left.

Above the forest the path traverses open slopes to the Bergeries de Capannelle at 1,586 m, a small cluster of stone huts and gîtes beneath a modest ski lift, with long views east toward the coast. Arriving mid-afternoon is standard, which leaves time for the important things: a cooked meal at the gîte, laundry on a warm rock, and idle speculation about whether the south really is 'easier'. (Answer: gentler underfoot, yes — but the big days are still to come, starting tomorrow.) Fill your bottles for an early start; stage 11 is the longest of the south.
