Rebuilt after the 2000 fire, perched at 1820 m on a broad ridge with panoramic views. Start of the dramatic ridge walk to Usciolu. Cistern water — treat it.

The place

Prati sits on a broad grassy saddle at 1,820 m, and the first thing it gives you is the sea — both of them, in fact. On a clear evening you can stand by the refuge and see the east coast glittering below while the ridge marches south into the haze, and the effect after days of enclosed valleys is like a window being thrown open. The current building went up after fire destroyed its predecessor in 2000, and it wears its exposed perch matter-of-factly.

That exposure is the point and the price: wind and cloud arrive here without an appointment, and the cistern water needs treating before you drink it. But settle in, cook dinner in the lee of the wall, and watch the lights of the coastal plain come on far below. Tomorrow's ridge walk to Usciolu — airy, sculpted, endlessly scenic — is the south's masterpiece, and it starts at your doorstep.
