Nestled in a rocky cirque at 1270 m with the famous Spasimata suspension bridge nearby. Meals & snacks; a memorable first mountain refuge experience.
The place
Carozzu sits in a bowl of orange granite so steep and theatrical that arriving feels like walking onto a stage set. The refuge's wooden terrace hangs above the Spasimata valley, and in the late afternoon it fills with hikers nursing drinks and staring up at the walls, trying to work out where on earth tomorrow's route could possibly go. (Spoiler: straight up.)
Just below lies the trail's most photographed piece of engineering — the Spasimata suspension footbridge, a wobbling ribbon of cables and slats strung across the torrent. Cross it in the morning light and you'll hear the river roaring beneath your boots; some hikers stride over grinning, others perform a slow, white-knuckled shuffle. Both are valid. Back at the refuge, the evening chill drops fast in this shaded cirque, so claim your bunk or pitch early and keep a warm layer within reach.
