Calenzana
Charming hilltop village with panoramic views over the Balagne coast.

Charming hilltop village with panoramic views over the Balagne coast. Shops, bakery, gite. Last full resupply before the wild north — stock up well.
The place
Calenzana smells of espresso and fresh bread, which is exactly what you want on the morning you're about to walk the length of Corsica. The village drapes itself over a hillside above the Balagne, all ochre rooftops and church bells, with the sea glittering behind you and a wall of grey granite rising ahead. In the square, hikers fuss over their packs with the nervous energy of people who have read too many trail reports, while locals sip their coffee and watch with the patience of those who have seen twenty thousand of you before.
Take a last slow look at the coast — you won't see it again for days. Buy more than you think you need at the bakery, top up your water at the fountain, and set off early: the first climb is long, shadeless by mid-morning, and famously humbling. The GR20 does not believe in warm-ups.
