Refuge de Matalza
Peaceful plateau bergerie at 1460 m surrounded by granite tors.

Peaceful plateau bergerie at 1460 m surrounded by granite tors. Simple meals and water. A quiet stop between the busy ridges of Usciolu and Asinau.
The place
After the high-wire theatrics of the Usciolu ridge, Matalza is the exhale. The bergerie sits on the gentle Cuscionu plateau at 1,460 m, a rolling upland of grass, juniper and weathered granite tors where streams meander instead of plunging and the walking, briefly, asks nothing of your hands. Cattle and pigs wander the plateau like extras with nowhere urgent to be; the loudest thing for miles is usually a bell.
The stop itself matches the landscape: low stone buildings, simple meals, an easy rhythm. This is a place for washing socks in the sun, writing the journal you've been neglecting, and lying in the grass watching clouds — recovery disguised as an afternoon. Sleep comes easily up here. Enjoy the softness while it lasts, because the trail's mood changes again at Monte Incudine, whose bulk waits patiently on tomorrow's horizon.
