Hidden in the valley below Petra Piana — legendary for its enormous omelettes and rustic charm. River bathing spot. Phone booking only.
The place
Drop off the ridge below Petra Piana and the world turns green again: beech shade, the sound of running water, and eventually the Bergerie de Tolla, a scatter of stone and timber in the valley where the pace of life is set by cheese, not contour lines. Its reputation travels the whole trail ahead of it, and the reputation is mostly about omelettes — vast, cheese-laden constructions that arrive at the table like a challenge and leave as a memory.
Below the bergerie the river offers proper bathing pools, and an afternoon here — swim, eat, doze, repeat — is the strongest argument going for choosing the valley variant. It's phone-booking only and gloriously informal; don't expect schedules or signage, expect dogs, woodsmoke and a warm welcome. If your itinerary allows a slow day anywhere in the central section, spend it here and thank yourself later.
