The place
Asinau sits in a wide, austere valley at the foot of Monte Incudine — at 2,134 m the southernmost of Corsica's two-thousanders, whose long summit ridge you'll likely have crossed on the way in, wind in your ears and half the south spread out below. The refuge here burned in 2016, and the site now operates as a bivouac stop: rows of tent pitches on the mountainside, big skies, and evenings that go from golden to cold with impressive speed.
Meals are taken at the Bergerie chez Aline next door, where hot food after the Incudine crossing achieves a significance out of all proportion to its ingredients. Pitch well, guy everything down — the valley knows how to produce wind — and step out after dark: with no building lights to speak of, the stars over Incudine are ferocious. Tomorrow the Bavella needles enter the picture, and the trail saves some of its best for last.
