The GR20 has reopened after the Albertacce fire

The trail is open again
Good news for anyone with a northern GR20 crossing this summer: the trail has reopened. The Haute-Corse fire and rescue service declared the Albertacce fire *fixé* (contained) at around 300 hectares, and on 23 July the authorities lifted the ban on the GR20 between the Asco and Ciottulu di i Mori refuges. The two stages that had been shut in both directions — Asco to Tighjettu, and Tighjettu to Ciottulu di i Mori — are walkable again.
The fire, sparked by lightning on 10 July above Albertacce in the Niolu, had closed this stretch for nearly two weeks at the height of the season and forced the evacuation of the Bergerie de Ballone and the Tighjettu wardens.
What to expect on the ground
The fire is out of its active phase but still under surveillance — crews stayed on site to treat residual hot spots after the reopening. Expect visible burn scars along the section, and don't be surprised by a lingering smell of smoke or the odd patch of blackened maquis near the path.
Nothing about a reopening removes the underlying summer fire risk. Corsica burns most years in July and August, and a closure can reappear at short notice if conditions turn.
Before you set off
- Confirm with the authorities, not the news. The Parc naturel régional de Corse and the Haute-Corse prefecture are the source of truth on closures — check them the day you walk.
- Re-check your refuge bookings. If your nights at Tighjettu, Ballone or Ciottulu di i Mori were disrupted by the closure, contact the refuges directly. PNRC refuges book through pnr-resa.corsica; the Bergerie de Ballone is private and books separately.
- Watch the fire-risk map. Météo-France publishes a daily fire-risk bulletin (around 6pm for the next day).
Our planner shows live refuge availability and a weather briefing for exactly this kind of fast-moving situation — but it's a companion to the official channels, not a replacement. When in doubt, check both and don't improvise around a closure.
